Dr David Unwin, the low-carb GP, returns for the first IHCAN Summit of the year on April 26, but he won’t be talking about diabetes – instead he’ll focus on the surprising “side effect” the low-carb/keto approach has on his patients’ liver function.

Dr Unwin and colleagues published their findings – “Beneficial Effects of the Ketogenic Diet on Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease” – in the Journal of Clinical Medicine last year. More than a third of the population is suffering with this liver dysfunction. “This is serious!” says Dr Unwin. “In my practice we find liver function blood tests improve FAST on this diet along with lipids, BP and diabetic control”. How does cutting dietary carbs improve liver function? As he’ll explain, “Weight loss is only part of it. There is evidence for reducing inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity and avoiding fructose”.

About Dr David Unwin

Dr. David Unwin, MD, is an award-winning general practitioner (or family doctor) known for pioneering the low-carb approach in the UK. Through the years, Dr. Unwin has been highly recognized for his work within his field.

In 2015, Dr. Unwin was made a UK Royal College of General Practitioners expert clinical advisor in 2015 for his dedicated efforts within the areas of patient communication and type 2 diabetes.

Then, in 2016, Dr. Unwin won the prestigious NHS Innovator of the Year award for his work with diabetes patients.

From 2017 to 2018, his practice saved £57,000 on drugs for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions by offering patients a dietary alternative to medications.

Also in 2018, Dr. Unwin was named the ninth most influential general practitioner in the UK by GP magazine Pulse. Moreover, he is a clinical expert in Diabetes at Fellowship of the UK Royal College of General Practitioners where he was elected as a Fellow back in 2008.

Additionally, Dr. Unwin is the medical advisor at the popular Low Carb Program and is doing his best to spread knowledge about low carb among doctors, dietitians, and nurses.

Dr. Unwin has also written several peer-reviewed papers to strengthen the science behind low-carb diets.

Dr. Unwin’s work has been covered by BBC, New Scientist, Daily Mail, and The British Medical Journal.

Dr. Sally Moorcroft, brings over two decades of experience in Integrative and Functional Medicine, with a particular focus on Herbal Medicine and Women’s Health.

Clinical Director and Co-Founder of the Northern Centre of Integrative and Functional Medicine (NCIFM), Lincolnshire, UK, and Co-founder of a range of organic herbal products, Dr. Sally’s Botanicals, she is also core tutor at NCIM, Bristol on their Master’s Level Diploma in Integrative Healthcare.

Her resume includes a blend of functional medicine, nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, and bio-identical hormone therapy. With a BSc (Hons) in Herbal Medicine, and five years of postgraduate training in medical homeopathy, additional training in TCM, medical acupuncture and aromatherapy.

She holds membership of the British Menopause Society and has completed training in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy at the Marion Gluck Clinic, London. She’s currently completing her IFM certification, having completed all core and advanced training.
